Webex Essential Schedule
Below is a list of what we plan to do in our upcoming Webex Essential sessions next week:
Webex Monday – Quick overview of LFH tasks; Grammar (Introducing)
Webex Tuesday – Transformation of Shapes (Teaching)
Wellbeing
Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships

Learning Intention:
We are learning to use the daisy technique so we can solve problems
Task:
- Previously, we learnt about the daisy technique and how this can help us to solve problems.
This week, you will use the daisy technique to solve a problem that a fictional character has faced.
First, think about a book that you have read recently.
What problem or problems did the main character face?
Choose one of these problems and use the daisy technique to find a solution.
Remember to write the problem on the stem of the daisy.
Then, list the possible solutions on each petal. Write the BEST solution in the middle of the flower.
Underneath your daisy, answer the following questions:
How did the character actually solve the problem in your book?
If the character made a different choice, would this have changed the story? How?
(20 minutes)
Reading
Learning Intention:
We are reading daily so we can build our reading stamina
Daily Task:
- Make sure you are reading a ‘just right’ book independently for at least 30 minutes each day.
This could include one of the books that your teacher has allocated to you on Active Learn (Bug Club/Rapid Readers) or Epic! Remember to record these books in your reading log.
(30 minutes daily)
Optional: Match one of the following books to each teacher in Year 5.
Scroll to the bottom to see if you were correct.

Learning Intention:
We are learning to distinguish between important and interesting information so we can understand nonfiction texts
Task:
Click here to go to Epic! and select a nonfiction book about a topic that you are curious to learn more about.
As you are reading, write down information that you think is important and information that you find interesting in a Double Entry Journal.

Nonfiction title:
(Do this task each day for 3 days - 20 mins each)
Writing/Spelling
Learning Intention:
We are learning to identify synonyms so we can expand our vocabulary
Task:
- Synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings as other words.
For example, ‘said’, ‘shouted’ and ‘whispered’ are words that have the same or similar meanings.
We have been learning how synonyms can be used to make our writing more interesting.
Below are five verbs (action words).
Find as many synonyms as possible for each of these verbs.
| asked |
looked |
loved |
jumped |
walked |
| |
|
|
|
|
Now, write five different sentences using five of the synonyms listed above.
(20-30 minutes)
Learning Intention:
We are learning to explore features of grammar so we can improve our writing
Webex Monday: Introducing Grammar task
Task:
Verbs = Action words
Adverbs = Words that tell how the action is done
Noun = Person, place, thing
Adjectives = Describing words
- Copy the sentence below into your homework book.
Then, underline and label the verb, adverb, adjective and noun.
The cheerful seven year old walked happily to the park.
Now, select one of your ‘just right’ texts. Copy two sentences from this book.
Then, underline and label the verb, adverb, adjective and noun in each sentence.
Finally, use your knowledge of synonyms to replace some of the words. Remember to reread your work to make sure it still makes sense.
(20-30 minutes)
Learning Intention:
We are responding to a picture stimulus so we can entertain, inform or persuade an audience
Task:

Use the picture above to complete one or more of the tasks below.
- Imagine all of the technology in the world suddenly broke. How would you manage without ANY technology?
Can you make a list of all the technology you use on a daily basis?
- Write instructions about how to survive a day without technology.
- Write a diary entry about your normal day, but think of alternative activities to replace the ones that require technology.
- Write a letter to a child living in the 1800’s, describing to them the technology we have today and how we use it. You could even write a response you might receive from that person!
- Write a persuasive argument about whether technology is good or bad for us.
(30-40 minutes)
Maths
Learning Intention:
We are learning to use efficient strategies so we can solve problems
Your fluency task is to be completed before every Maths task.
Try to complete 5-10 minutes each day as a fluency task, to warm up your brain.
Task:
- Click here to play Beat the Clock.
- Click here to play Hit the Button.
(5-10 minutes daily)
Learning Intention:
We are learning about circumference so we can measure circle or round objects
Task:
- Step 1 - Collect some round objects, such as balls, mugs, drink bottle, cups or fruit.
Step 2 - Estimate the circumference of the object and record in a table (like below).
Step 3 - Use a piece of string/wool to measure the circumference.
Step 4 - Measure the string using your ruler.
Step 5 - Calculate the difference between your estimate and the actual.

| Object |
Estimate |
Actual |
Difference |
| Apple |
20cm |
24cm |
24cm - 20cm = 4cm |
| |
|
|
|
Optional: Take your study of circumference one step further.
Can you find out what these terms mean? radius, diameter, pi
Can you use these terms to work out the circumference of a round object?
(20-30 minutes)
Learning Intention:
We are learning to measure accurately so we can use measurement in real life
Task:
- For this task, you need to measure the length of everyone’s feet within your house!

First, measure everyone’s feet in cm.
Then, put these measurements in order from smallest to largest.
Now, add all the measurements together.
What is the difference between the largest and smallest measurement?
Finally, list each measurement in mm and cm. Use decimal points if necessary.
Record your working out in your homework book.
Optional: Create a graph showing the length of everyone’s feet!
(20-30 minutes)
Learning Intention:
We are learning about transformation of shapes so we can classify flip, slide or turn
Webex Tuesday: Teaching transformation of shapes

Task:
- Create a table like below.
Select a 2D shape (not a square) or a capital letter.
Flip, slide and turn your object.
Repeat this step with a different shape or letter.

Optional - Use a square and draw a coloured pattern inside the square. Now use this to flip, slide and turn.
(20-30 minutes)
Inquiry/Science
Learning Intention:
We are investigating how technology has changed over time so we can inform an audience
Task:
PLEASE NOTE: This homework task was given to you in paper form on Thursday. We would like you to continue with this task during LFH.
People have used technology for a long time, but it sure has changed over time. Like this picture below of one of the very first computers ever invented.

- The Year 5 teachers would like you to research a piece of technology that has changed over time.
You will need to prepare an oral presentation, at least 1 minute in length, to present to your class at the end of Week 2.
Choose a piece of old technology to use as the focus of your presentation.
Here are some possible ideas; pager, camera, old phone, typewriter, tapes, CDs, VHS, floppy disc, small machines, answering machine, 33/45 record or other technology items.

You could bring in photos, a poster/drawing or the item itself to support your presentation. You could also prepare a PowerPoint presentation saved to a USB.
Cover these questions:
- What does the piece of technology look like/sound like?
- When was it created?
- How was it used?
- Is it used today?
- Are there similar items or has it changed over time?
- Did this technology make life easier? How?
You may choose to prepare speech/palm cards to help with your presentation.
(60-90 minutes)
