In Physical Education, we aim for all students to be actively involved in sport and acquire the necessary skills to participate in a fun, supportive environment. To achieve this, students at Laburnum focus directly on the fundamental motor skills (including run, kick, throw, catch, jump and bounce) from Prep right through to Year 6. In the Junior School, we focus heavily on the development of these skills. As students progress to Middle and Senior School, they start using these skills in four main categories: Striking/Fielding, Net/Wall, Invasion and Target Games.
Through our teaching we incorporate our school values of showing respect, resilience, integrity and curiosity within each lesson. This allows our students to learn, thrive and contribute in their sporting lives.
We are currently providing programs which include, Athletics, Aquatics, Ball Handling, Dance, Manipulation, Sport Education, Basic Movement & Gymnastics. There are opportunities for students to compete in inter school sport as well as represent our school in Zone, Regional and State level.
For over 20 years, a daily fitness jogging/walking club has been operating before school in the adjacent Blacks Walk parkland track and, more recently, on the synthetic track on the school oval. Students who participate receive certificates and trophies at school assemblies to acknowledge their dedication to their personal fitness.
All students can participate in our annual swimming program, culminating in Year 6 with the opportunity to be awarded the Victorian Water Safety Certificate. Year 4 - 6 students also have a three day camp to develop adventure and leadership skills.
Our school is proud to have been selected to participate in the Sporting Schools Excellence program from 2019.
