All government schools follow the same guidelines and timeline for 2027 Prep enrolments. The timeline seeks to make the enrolment process simpler, clearer and fairer for families.
Parents/carers can read more about the general Prep enrolment information process on the Department of Education website page here. The 2027 Foundation (Prep) Enrolment Information Pack for Parents and Carers will be released on the same page in Week 1, Term 2.
School enrolment zones have not yet been updated for 2027. Parents can now check for their child's 2026 neighbourhood school here.
For more information about the Department of Education's school zones and Placement Policy, please click here.
To start primary school in 2027, your child will need to turn 5 years old by 30 April 2027. Schooling is compulsory for children who have turned 6 years old.
If your child is starting Foundation (Prep) in 2027, you will be able to apply to enrol your child in a Victorian government primary school from the start of Term 2, 2026 (Monday 20 April 2026). Enrolments should be submitted by Friday 31 July 2026, at the latest.
Our school has enrolment restrictions from the Department of Education, which limit the number of 2027 Prep enrolments we can accommodate. Please apply early to avoid disappointment.
What you need for enrolment:
We suggest that families begin compiling the following documents to support your enrolment application. Delays can be avoided by submitting all documentation at the time of submitting an enrolment application form.
Essential documents for enrolment:
To commence online enrolment:
Visit the VicStudents online portal to create an account and complete the online application form. Please ensure that all documents required are attached to the application. These can be added over multiple sessions.
The Department's Digital Enrolment Parent/Carer Guide for using the online portal is available here (unfortunately, only in English at this point).
If your child's enrolment is accepted, we also require the following documents before Prep Transition sessions in Term 4, 2026:
School Tours for parents/carers:
Laburnum Primary School will offer school tours from March 2026. Our adults-only tours are only held on Thursdays at 12:30 pm during Terms 1 and 2, as our current Preps are not in their classrooms at that time. We find that, by limiting the tours to parents/carers only, there are adequate opportunities for all participants to have their questions asked and answered. Enrolled children visit the school during the Term 4 Prep Transition program.

Our Prep Transition Program:
Details of our 2026 - 2027 Transition program will be available on this page shortly.
All local government schools follow the same Prep Transition Program guidelines.

We also urge all families of enrolled students to register for our Out of School Hours Care program, TeamKids, even if you don't plan to use this service yet.
Registration is free, but essential, before your child can attend the service.
