Week beginning 23 August, 2021
Wednesday 25, Thursday 26, Friday 27 August 2021
Every day you can choose a task to complete in your scrapbook from each of the sections below: Reading, Writing, Maths, Science and Wellbeing. Please write the date for each activity completed.
Webex Essential Schedule
Below is a list of what we plan to do in our Webex Essential sessions:
Please have a workbook or paper and a pencil with you for these sessions.
Webex Wednesday: Writing - handwriting, clockwise letters (Introducing)
Webex Thursday: Wellbeing - calming strategies (Reviewing)
Webex Friday: Fun Friday! Come dressed in your favourite colour.
Wellbeing
Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships ‘Stress Management’
Learning Intention:
We are learning to identify calming strategies so we can calm ourselves down
Webex Thursday: Wellbeing - calming strategies (Reviewing)
Task:
Practise the following 2 breathing strategies
(5 minutes each day)
Six Sides of Breathing:
Imagine you are drawing a hexagon with your finger in the air using the hexagon image below to help you.
As you draw over the first side of the hexagon, take a deep breath in, feeling your shoulders rise as the air fills you.
Hold your breath for a moment as you trace over the next side as you hold your breath for a moment.
Slowly breathe out as you trace the third side of the hexagon.
Continue tracing around the bottom three sides of the hexagon as you complete another deep breath.
Continue The Six Sides of Breathing cycle until you feel calm and relaxed.

Lazy 8 Breathing:
Imagine you are tracing the Lazy 8 with your finger starting at the star and taking a deep breath in.
As you cross over to the other side of the Lazy 8, slowly let your breath out.
Continue breathing around the Lazy 8 until you have a calm body and mind.
At the end of the week, discuss with a family member which breathing strategy you prefer.
Reading
Learning Intention:
We are learning to monitor our reading by rereading a sentence
Tasks:
Before reading: What do you think is happening in this picture? Can you describe what this picture is about?

During reading: When you get to a tricky word, make the sound of the first letter and think what the unknown word could be. Have a go at reading the tricky word and think,
‘does it look right?’
‘does it make sense?’
Check the tricky word by clicking the ‘read to me’ function. Go back to the start of the sentence and reread for fluency.
After reading: Think about how rereading helped you understand what you were reading.
Use the strategy above when completing your independent reading with your Bug Club books.
(10+ minutes a day)
Learning Intention:
We are learning to make connections with the text so we understand the characters
Task:
Log in to Story Box Library here, and listen to Under the Love Umbrella.
There are lots of different types of families in this story who like to do all sorts of activities, such as going to the beach, camping and reading together.

Create a list of activities the families in the story enjoy doing together.
Draw a picture of your family doing something you all enjoy.
(20 minutes)
During Lockdowns, we often don’t get to spend time with people we love. You may be missing your grandparents, cousins and friends.
After listening to the story Under the Love Umbrella, brainstorm strategies we can use to remember that we are loved when we can’t be with our family. For example, giving loved ones a phone call, drawing them a picture etc.
(15 minutes)
Writing.
Learning Intention:
We are learning that writing tells a message so we can write for different purposes
Task:
Think about the people you love and what you would like to say to them.
Write a card for someone you love and perhaps a family member can help you deliver it to their letterbox, send it in the mail or even take a photo to send them.

(20+ minutes)
Learning Intention:
We are learning to write high frequency words so we can spell them correctly
Task:
Draw parking spaces on a piece of paper or using chalk, like the examples below, and fill in each space with one of your high frequency words.

Drive your car to each space and read the high frequency word.
A variation of this game is asking a family member to say a high frequency word and you drive your car to that space as quickly as you can.
(15 minutes)
Learning Intention:
We are learning to write clockwise letters so people can read our writing
Webex Wednesday: Writing - handwriting, clockwise letters (Introducing)
Task:
Practise writing the capital letter M and lowercase letter m 10 times in your book.
Make sure you start at the top of the letter and follow the arrow.
Once you have finished the letter M and m, write the capital letter N and lowercase letter n 10 times.

If you would like an extra challenge you could write some words beginning with an m or n.
(15 minutes)
Maths
Learning Intention:
We are learning to show numbers in different ways so we understand numbers
Tasks:
Divide a page into two equal parts or fold a page in half.
Collect 9 objects such as counters, stones or lego. Drop your 9 objects onto your folded page.
Describe the arrangement to a family member e.g. 7 on one side, 2 on the other side.
Write the different combinations that you found, using ‘_ and _ is _’.

How many different ways did you find to make 9?
How do you know if you found every way to make 9?
Hint: there are more than 3 ways. You could repeat this activity with a different number up to 10.
(15 minutes)
Learning Intention:
We are learning to collect information so we can create a picture graph
Task:
Create a table like the one below. Look at your family members' eye colours and put a tally mark in the correct box.
A tally mark looks like this: l
When you get four tally marks, the 5th one goes across the other 4, like a fence, to show 5. Can you see this in the example below?

You might like to call some family or friends on the phone and ask them about their eye colour too.
(10 minutes)
Now, using your information, create a picture graph, like the one below.

(15 minutes)
Science/Inquiry
Learning Intention:
We are learning to make our own toys so we can test how they move
Tasks:
In Science we are going to be making our own moving toys.

This week, we will make a cardboard spinner. See the steps below and the video to help you make your own spinner.
