Reading
Learning Intentions:
We are learning to develop our reading stamina
We are learning to make text to world connections
Tasks:
- Remember to complete your reading log each day, for ANY reading you do.
Click here to log in to Bug Club and read through the texts that have been assigned to you.
The books you read through Bug Club replaces the home reader programme for Term 3.
Don’t forget to complete the quizzes as you read.
If you don’t complete all the quizzes then the book won’t be saved as ‘read’.
(20 minutes)
- Read a just right book of your choice independently for at least 20 minutes a day.
Don’t forget to use the resources that are available to you, such as Story Box Library and Epic!.
This would be a fantastic time to practise your SMART reading goal.
(20 minutes)
- Text to world connections:
In order to make meaning of what we read, we make text to world connections.
Text to world connections are when we connect the events or story line in a text to events that occur or have happened in the world.
For example, the story ‘Out of Time: Lost on the Titanic’ reminded me of the real life event of the sinking of the Titanic.

Click here to read ‘Beth - The Story of a Child Convict’.
Use one of the sentence starters in the above image to write a text to world statement using the story ‘Beth - The Story of a Convict Child’.
Answer the following questions. Can you use full sentences?
- Why was Molly on board the Lady Penrhyn?
- How long did it take to get from England to Australia?
- How do you know that the work that Beth and Molly had to do was hard?
- What things do the natives do that shows Beth, Molly and Mr Brady that they were friendly?
- Why did food have to be rationed?
- What does the ragdoll symbolise throughout the story? What tells you this?
- Who is the real-life person that the main character, Beth, is based on?
(40 minutes)

Maths
Learning Intentions:
We are learning to choose the correct strategy to solve addition and subtraction worded problems
We are learning to complete a pretest for money and multiplication
- Fluency Game
Click here to play ‘Hit the Button’.
Choose the option circled below, ‘U + U + U’.

When adding the three numbers together, try to use the most efficient strategy.
For example: make ten, doubles and near doubles, and known facts.
(20 minutes)
Tasks:
- Worded Problems

Using the information in the table above, solve the following worded problems in your Learning from Home book.
- What is the total number of people that visited the art museum in January?
- Compared to January, how many more children go to the museum in February?
- How many adults visited the museum in February?
- 16 more seniors visited in March than the number that visited in January and February combined.
How many seniors visited the museum in March?
- Which month had the highest number of visitors?
(60 minutes)
Challenge: Write an equation using “x” and then solve the equation.
In February, there were x museum pass holders admitted to the museum.
68 of the visitors did not have a museum pass.
- Essential Assessment
Log on to Essential Assessment and complete the pretests for Multiplication and Money and Financial Mathematics.
Please use the school value of integrity by completing the pretests on your own.
Remember, this will help us to determine the next steps in your learning.
(60 minutes)
P.E./Movement Breaks
To view the Leader Board after the first week click here.
In case you forgot how it works:
Keep track of how much time you spend being active from Monday to Friday each week -
1 minute of any form of exercise = 1km.
Keep track of the type of activity you participate in from Monday to Friday each week
e.g. walking, running, skipping, bike riding.
Click here to enter your results by 3pm on Friday.
Remember to demonstrate the school value of integrity when entering your results!
For example, if you complete a total of 30 minutes of exercise every day from Monday to Friday you will contribute 150 km! (30 x 5=150).
Bonus offer – the first 5 people who submit their results and have used a particular type of exercise (hint - one word _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _), we will double your result!
Good luck and remember every kilometre counts!!
Inquiry
Learning Intentions:
We are researching our essential question for our personal inquiry
We are organising our information to present in Webex
Task:
- This week you will work on completing your personal inquiry.
Below are some books on Epic! that could help you if you are still collecting important information to answer your essential question:
Click here to read Super Simple Australian Art on Epic!
Click here to read Uluru: Australia’s Aboriginal Heart on Epic!
Click here to read Vanishing Cultures: Down Under on Epic!
Click here to read Australia on Epic!
Click here to access a list of links that can also help you with your research.
You can also go to ClickView and watch the videos from previous weeks again in Inquiry.
Once you’ve logged in, go to the Libraries tab, then click on Laburnum Primary School.
Click on Years 3 and 4, then click on Inquiry.
Now, scroll down to find the videos about art, shelter, food and language.
When you are sure that you have enough information from a variety of different sources, decide how to present your findings.
You could present your information on a poster, brochure, powerpoint, booklet, speech, diorama, triorama or any other creative way you can think of!
Once finished, ask yourself the following questions:
- Is my presentation eye catching and interesting to read?
- Do all of my sentences make sense? Are they easy to understand?
- Do I understand all of the words that I have included? Can I explain any technical words?
- Have I included pictures, labelled diagrams or maps?
(60-90 minutes - you might want to spread this task over a couple of days)
Please bring what you have done so far for your presentation to our Webex session on Thursday.
Inquiry and Science Pretests

(60 minutes)
Science
Learning Intention:
We are learning to write up an experiment
Task:
- For the final task in Science this term, you need to finish your experiment by writing up your findings.
This will include a paragraph titled RESULTS and a paragraph titled CONCLUSION.
The RESULTS paragraph clearly states your results.
The information will come directly from the results of your experiment.
Include a bar graph to show how the length of a shadow changes depending on how far the light source is from the object.
For example;
‘At 10cm apart the shadow formed by the stick measured 8cm.
As the torch was moved away in 10cm blocks from the object, the shadow shortened to 6cm, then 4cm, then 2cm.
When the torch was 50cm away, the shadow became too faint to measure.’
The CONCLUSION paragraph looks at whether your prediction was correct or incorrect, and importantly tries to explain WHY.
For example;
‘The results of this experiment show that Mr Palmer-Leeraar’s prediction - that shadows get smaller as an object is moved away from a light source - is correct.
This is shown clearly by the results because at only 10cm the shadow was 8cm long.
As the distance from the object increased the size of the shadow decreased.
This happens because, as the light source is moved away from the object, less light is hitting the object and therefore a smaller shadow is formed.’
Please make sure you read this carefully and ask your teacher ANY questions you have!
(60 minutes)
Success Criteria:
- I wrote up the results of my experiment
- I drew a bar graph to display my data
- I wrote a conclusion to my experiment, explaining why my prediction was correct or incorrect
Please take a photo of your Science and upload it to the Sentral Parent Portal by Thursday 17 September.
