Week beginning - 10 August 2020
[Previous weeks' Specialist pages are here]
Spanish
30 minutes
Learning Intention:
We are learning about the history of Mexican dance.
This week we are learning about a person named Amalia Hernandez who is a well-known dancer.
She founded the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.
Activity 1: Read a book on Epic! called Danza! Click here. It is written in English but includes some Spanish words.
Before reading:
How many types of dance styles can you name?
Do you take any dance classes or know someone else who does?
Do you think this book will be interesting to you personally? Why or why not?
Do you think this book will be fiction or non-fiction? Why/why not?
During reading:
Write down any interesting facts that you find when you are reading.
Write down any words or phrases that you don’t understand or might need further clarification.
Write a list of any Spanish words that you are interested in learning how to pronounce.
After reading:
Have you decided whether this book is fiction or non-fiction?
What elements of the book have helped you to decide?
Write a short summary of the book, including the following information:
Describe what the style of “folklorico” dancing is.
What motivated Amalia to pursue dancing as a child?
Why do you think her style of dance became famous throughout Mexico?
Activity 2:
Compare two texts
View the Spanish version of “La Danza”!
Choose one word from each page and write it down (even if you don’t know what it means!).
La Danza! (Spanish version) Click here.
Now read through the English version of “Dance”.
Dance! (English version) Click here.
From the list of Spanish words that you have written, can you find their meaning using the English version of the book?
For example:
bailarina = ballerina
Music
Learning Intention:
We are learning to sing and dance to a song.
There are two new sections of the song ‘We Go Together’ to learn over the next 3 weeks.
Log into ClickView and choose one of the following videos:
Click here for the choreography (dancing)
Click here for the spoken chant in the middle of the song
When you have learnt all your sections to the song:
Click here to sing along with the whole song
Art
Learning intention:
We are learning to explore ideas and artworks from different cultures and times as inspiration to create visual artworks.
This activity can last as long as you need to finish and you can go back to it from time to time.
Read the story of the Willow Patterned Plate here.
Find a clean white paper plate and some ultramarine or cobalt blue drawing tools (pens, markers, pencils and crayons) and/or paints or ink.
Design your own Willow Patterned Plate using ideas and characters from the story.
Last term you learnt that a motif is the repeated design piece in a pattern.
You may copy some of the Chinese motifs and symbols below or even make up your own.

Learning Intention:
We are learning that many authors are illustrators.
Write down any authors you know who also illustrate their own or others books. (How clever to be able to write the words and draw the pictures!).
Leigh Hobbs is one of our most well-known Australian children’s authors/illustrators.
He is famous for writing and illustrating the ‘Mr Chicken’ series of books.
To hear Mr Chicken (a.k.a Mrs Keogh) read ‘Mr Chicken Lands on London', log in to ClickView and watch Mr Chicken Lands on London
To meet Leigh Hobbs on Story Box Library and read ‘Mr Chicken All Over Australia’ and ‘Mr Chicken arriva a Roma’ click here.
Research a famous world monument or city in the world that you think Mr Chicken might like to visit.
Create a front cover for a new Mr Chicken book e.g. ‘Mr Chicken Swims to the Great Barrier Reef’.
Illustrate your page in the same style as Leigh Hobbs. You will need to study his illustrations carefully.
Write a blurb about this new adventure on the back.
Alternatively you can print or draw a map of Australia and create a road trip for Mr Chicken to take that is different to his journey in ‘Mr Chicken All Over Australia’.
Think of some great places you may have visited in Australia that Mr Chicken would enjoy visiting.
Clearly label and create a pictorial representation on your map.
You may like to illustrate Mr Chicken in the middle of your map.

Fun fact: Did you know that Leigh Hobbs had many alternate titles for his other famous picture story book ‘Horrible Harriet?’ These included Not So Nice Nora, Bad Betty and Feral Beryl.
