Word Detectives: Being Spanish
Learning intentions:
We are learning to translate simple words and phrases using picture cues in a digital text.
We are learning to compare and contrast different cultures.
Our focus task over the next three weeks relates to a video called 'Being Spanish' on ClickView.
You will need to use your login details to access the video about the daily lives and routines of children who live in Valencia, Spain.
Activity 1: Watch the video until you reach 2 minutes 15 seconds.
Pause and watch this section of the video again to familiarise yourself with the text that appears on the screen.
Here is a list of words and phrases that appear as text in the video.
Can you figure out the meaning of these words as the children are speaking?
What do you think these words mean in English?
Clue: The children are comparing places - the city and countryside, beaches and mountains in Valencia.
la cuidad
mucha gente
el campo
poca gente
muy ruidosa
muy tranquila
muchos coches
caballos
muchas playas
las montañas
Are there any other words in the video that you can recognise?
If so, what are they?
Include your answers in your list.
Activity 2: Start the video at 2 minute 15 seconds. Watch until you reach 6 minutes 26 seconds and then stop the video.
Pause and watch this section of the video again to familiarise yourself with the text that appears on the screen.
The second part of the video shows us what it is like in a Spanish school.
Answer the following questions:
How does the students’ day begin?
What were some of the activities that they did during their day?
What activities were the same as what you do at school?
What activities are different to what you do at school?
Here is a list of words and phrases that appear as text in the video.
Can you figure out the meaning of these words as the children are speaking?

mi profesora
mis compañeros

Activity 3: Watch the rest of the ’Being Spanish’ video.
As you are learning about their houses and everyday lives, think about what is the same and different between the lives of Australian and Spanish students.
Step 1: In your Spanish books or on a piece of paper, draw a Venn diagram.
Label the top of the left hand circle “Australia”
Label the top of the right hand circle “Spain”
Where the circles overlap, label this area as “The same”
Step 2: Think of some things that Australian children do - at home, at school or with their friends.
List them in the “Australia” circle.
Think of things that Spanish children do as well. List them in the “Spanish” circle.
Consider some things that children in BOTH Spain and Australia do that are the SAME.

Music
Learning Intention: We are learning to sing a part in a song.
We will be learning this song over the next 3 weeks.
Click here to be guided through the words to your verse on ClickView.
Art
Learning intention: We are learning to identify and discuss how ideas are expressed in artworks from a range of places, times and cultures, including artworks by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Aboriginal Rarrk paintings were traditionally painted on bark using pigments made from grinding plants and stones and blending the dust with animal fat.
These paintings depicted the patterns, shapes and lines inside an animal and for this reason have also been called X-ray paintings.
Look at some more Rarrk paintings here and consider how the animals are divided up.
Why might they have depicted the parts of an animal in this way?

Make your own patterned painting of an Australian animal using dark paper, and some lighter coloured pencils, pastels or paints.
Draw the outline of your animal first. Then divide the outline into considered areas.
Carefully repeat delicate crosshatching lines in some of your patterns.
Take your time like you would a mindfulness colouring in.
When it’s complete you might like to glue or sew sticks to the top and bottom.
You can then hang it with some string on each end at the top.
Library
Learning Intention: We are learning about an author of our choice.
Choose an author you would like to learn more about.
You can learn about your author, by investigating their website.
There is also information about different authors on ClickView, Story Box Library and ABC Education (your author may be featured on these sites).
Present your information any way you like.
You might make a poster, a booklet, a brochure, a slide show, a hanging mobile, a video or a powerpoint presentation.
Presentation ideas – you can include as many as you like
Create a timeline about the author’s life and the books they have written.
Make a fact sheet about the author.
Pretend you are the author and record someone asking you questions about your life and work.
Design a trivia quiz based around the author and their books.
Create a story map listing the books the author has written.
Survey your family and friends to find the author’s most popular book.
List all the characters from the author’s work.
Video yourself reading a chapter of your favourite book by the author.
