Bullying No Way is an annual commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across Australia next week. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to prevent bullying.
The theme for 2025 is 'Be bold. Be kind. Speak up.'
This Bullying No Way Week, students, schools, families and communities are reminded to be bold and say something, be kind and support someone, and be proud to take a stand against bullying.
For assembly next Friday 15 August, we're hoping students can wear or bring something in the hero colour for the campaign; purple – symbolising peace, strength and empowerment to take a stand against bullying behaviour.
Parents/carers can visit the Bullying No Way website for tips around how to discuss bullying at home. Check out the advice for parents here. Please ensure you talk with your child about online behaviour in your own home, as cyber safety continues to be the biggest concern for many schools, including LPS. Our Technologies website page includes useful parent resources to help you learn about apps and programs that are suitable for your child's age group.
Parents can access the school’s Bullying Prevention Policy to learn more about our process for preventing and responding to bullying.
If you have concerns that your child is being bullied, please contact their classroom teacher in the first instance. If you believe the behaviour constitutes a crime, or is a serious incident of cyberbullying, please refer to the Bullying No Way website for information on how to report to other authorities and access wellbeing help.
An important Semester 2 reminder to our community of the significant number of LPS students with anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. LPS allergens include eggs, kiwi fruit, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. cashews, pistacchios, walnuts, hazlenuts, pecans), pine nuts, coconut, dairy products, fish and shellfish, wheat and other grasses, soy, sesame, certain insect stings, pollen, animal hair and medications. It is critical that the school community understands that contact with or ingesting these allergens could be life-threatening for some of our students.
Even if your own child can eat the foods above, we try to reduce the risks to others by asking for your support in a number of ways. Shared food and food brought from home can pose a risk. Importantly, we ask that you do not provide your child with peanut butter or Nutella sandwiches or snacks with nut products in them, as nuts are our most prevalent allergens.
Additionally, parents should never provide birthday food treats for their children to share at school. As the risk of sharing foods is too high, our teachers will not distribute these.
Our school is ‘allergy aware’ and, by reducing the risks and developing the strategies suggested by Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia, as outlined in our school Anaphylaxis Management Policy, we aim to educate all students about caring for themselves and others. Thanks for your support.
KimWorking together to keep our children safe...
It is concerning that we continue to witness behaviour by some parents that put our children’s safety at risk.
It is important to observe all parking restrictions and obey traffic rules when dropping off and picking up your child. These are in place to maximise safety for everyone.
Is your child familiar with Stop, look, listen and think' when they cross the road?
Stop before you come to the edge of the pavement
Look both ways. Look right, Look Left, Look Right again
Listen for the sound of approaching traffic. You may be able to hear it before you see it
Think is there enough time to cross the road safely?
LPS Snack Club
Our Prep students have been busy building their number knowledge in Maths! They've been learning all about the numbers from 0 to 10, what they look like in numeral form, counting forwards and backwards, how they appear on a tens frame, and how we can recognise them through subitising.
Students have discovered that numbers can be made in different ways and broken into smaller parts. This is called partitioning.
To put this learning into action, the Preps have been playing a fun ‘Friends of Ten’ game. Through this activity, they practise fluently making combinations that add up to ten.
If you want to play this game at home, ask your child to teach you or you can watch this video.
It’s been wonderful to see the students growing in confidence as they explore, represent, count and play with numbers to 10!
This term we begin the Stand Up Project in earnest. Many students in Year 5 volunteered to be Stand Up leaders, who will teach other students strategies for supporting each other against bullying. Several of these leaders began the project by running a staff meeting for all the teachers explaining what they plan to do this term. They followed this up by running a parent information session as well! This was all with the support of Dr Zach Greig, who founded the Stand Up Project.
For Inquiry this term we will be investigating needs and wants in the community. After investigating this topic, students will plan a business they believe would meet a need or want in the community, which they will then pitch to their teachers and peers. We can’t wait to see what they come up with! To support their final project, we are looking at persuasive writing for literacy, so their business pitches can be extra convincing!
In Maths, in response to our student learning data, we have started developing strategies for multiplying larger numbers. Students have been practising using the area model this week and will investigate written strategies for multiplication over the next two weeks. So far feedback about the area model strategy from students has been positive. They have stated that it helps them see where they have made mistakes and it is easy to use.
Year 6 Writers Bring Biographies to Life!
Our Year 6 students have been busy diving into the world of biographies this term!
As part of our writing unit, we have been researching and crafting detailed biographies or fictional biographies about a person who inspires us or captures our interests.
From famous athletes and historical figures students have shown curiosity and creativity. We have distinguished between essential and non-essential information to include in our biographies.
Through this writing process, we have learnt how to research facts from credible sources, paraphrase information into our own words and structure a life story by writing in an engaging and informative way.
Here are some interesting facts we’ve learnt from our research:
“In 2014, Emma Watson released the ‘HeForShe’ Campaign to speak about feminism and female equality”. (Alexia V, 6A)
“At the age of 11 Greta became very sad about climate change. She temporarily stopped talking”. (Indie V, 6B)
“At the age of 12, Summer McIntosh competed in the Central Region Championships and swam a time of 9 minutes, 7 seconds and 16 milliseconds in the girls 800m freestyle. She broke a 45-year-old Canadian record by 5.67 seconds”. (Xier L, 6L)
“Mr. Beast was raised in a signal parent household with his mum. His older brother had to step up and help raise him”. (Iverson B, 6P)
We can’t wait to publish and present our biographies!
Netball Stars Shine at Ryan’s Reserve!
Our Year 6 netball team proudly represented our school at Ryan’s Reserve in Richmond, where they competed in the Division Netball Competition. They played four exciting games and showed incredible skill, determination and team spirit throughout the day.
The results from the day are:
Despite the tough competition, the team showed outstanding perseverance, resilience and good sportsmanship both on and off the court.
We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the way the netball team represented our school with pride.
Well done, team!
Details of our Extracurricular Activities for Term 3 are listed below, with a weekly schedule further down this page.
As teachers will organise the school-based activities and remind students about these, there is no need for parents to register, unless there is a cost for the activity.
Please note that Chess Club requires registration. Chess Club is led by external providers, with a cost involved, if you would like your child to participate. Please see the Contribute page for further information.
Joggers Club
Joggers Club is supervised by our House Captains. Students from Years 1 - 6 can run, walk or jog laps of the athletics track.
Chess Club*
The Chess Club at Laburnum P.S. is run by “Chess Ideas”. There is always a free trial session at the beginning of each term. The children are instructed in two small groups, where a new skill or strategy is introduced, followed by a game and is supervised at all times by a teacher from the school.
Please see the Contribute page for further information.
Junior School Council
The Junior School Council provides an avenue for 'student voice' and to contribute positively to the school community. It allows students the opportunity to experience leadership at Laburnum Primary School and consists of two student representatives from each class in Years 1 to 6. Through active involvement, the Junior School Council encourages student participation within the decision making processes for fundraising, presentations, school events, charity focuses and school recommendations.
Library
The library is open for students to return and borrow books. They also have the opportunity to read quietly, share a story, choose an activity including craft, chess, puzzles, construction blocks and board games. Our friendly Year 6 library captains are always on hand to assist students.
Minecraft Club
Minecraft Club is an opportunity for children to build, create and collaborate together through coding, using the Department-provided Minecraft Education. During Term 3, as a result of its popularity, this club is open to interested students in Years 4 &5 in odd weeks and Years 3 & 6 in even weeks.
Art Club
Students can come to share a project with friends, work on a personal task, or find out about competitions and exhibitions to enter. Art Captains will be in attendance to talk to students about their work and will sometimes provide activities. This is a quiet space for creative industry and thinking, or reading about art and artists.
Culture Club
Culture Club is a fun and inclusive space where students come together to explore and celebrate the many cultures that make up our school community.
Guitar Club
Guitar Club will be open to all students interested in playing acoustic guitar or ukelele. In Term 3 we will practise basic chord shapes and simple songs. All skill levels are welcome. Guitars and ukeleles will be provided or students may bring their own.
LPS Choir (time to be confirmed soon)
The Laburnum Primary School Choir is open to all students in Years 4-6 who enjoy singing. While the choir is predominately about singing, elements of dance and drama will also be included. The choir rehearses once a week at lunchtimes in the Performing Arts room. Aural and performance skills are enhanced as students develop an understanding of various music genres, what it means to perform in a group and how to collaborate to create harmonious sound.
It is important that students commit to being a choir member and consistently attend weekly rehearsals. Extra rehearsals may be required when preparing for performances.

BOOK WEEK IS COMING SOON!!!!
One of the most heartwarming aspects of Book Week is the sense of community it fosters. Books have a unique way of bringing people together, and this celebration is no exception.
Book Week also serves as a reminder of the gift of reading. By focusing on promoting literacy, enhancing imagination, celebrating diversity, and making reading fun, we hope to instil a lifelong appreciation for reading in all our students.
This year, Book Week will be celebrated from the 18-22 August, with our Book Week dress up day being held on Friday 22 August.
In anticipation of this exciting event, we are asking everyone to put their thinking caps on and start thinking about which book character you would like to be.
Perhaps you could dress up as a book character
related to the CBCA 2025 theme ‘Book an Adventure.
What we are learning
This term in Library we are studying the Children’s Book Council of Australia 2025 shortlisted books. All books on the shortlist are chosen for many reasons including literary merit, originality, book design and illustrations.
CBCA’s main goal has always been to encourage Australian writers, illustrators and publishers to produce children’s literature to an exceptional standard and to highlight the importance of reading.
The shortlisted categories we focus on at Laburnum are Younger Readers (Years 5 and 6), Picture Book (Years 3 and 4), Early Childhood (Prep, Years 1 and 2) and the Eve Pownall award for information books.
Our students judge the shortlisted books in their category using similar criteria to the CBCA judges. After we have read and judged all 6 shortlisted books, we vote. It is always exciting to see how our votes compare to the CBCA judges for Book of the Year in each category.
This year, for the first time, we are also lucky to have the CBCA Award for New Illustrator books to read. The CBCA recognises outstanding talent in the field of Australian children's book illustration. This award focuses on illustrators who are new to the field and whose work significantly enhances the overall appreciation of the book
The books nominated for the 2025 CBCA shortlist are:
