Jana Loucas (organiser), Jo Braden, Adriana Bonollo, Jacqui Purcell, Bernadette Sparkes, Jack Carter, Jayde Fielding, Matt Arnott, Danyon Smith, Shazan Marikar and Jenny Simmons. We'll look forward to sharing some photos of this beach camp in the next eNews.
We are now sharing government schools' Year 6 - 7 Transition Flyers for parents, as they are received. Please see the dedicated page for information.
The school grounds will be closed over the holidays while heavy construction works take place. As these include the staggered demolition of eight classrooms containing asbestos, works need to occur while students and staff are offsite.
This work is split into two demolition events, with the first beginning on Monday 7 April. The second will follow, again during the holidays and dependent on weather conditions.
Please support us to keep everyone safe by ensuring your children stay away from the school grounds and use neighbourhood parks and playgrounds if needed. OSHClub are relocating their vacation program to other schools during this time.
Parents are reminded that school finishes at 2:30 p.m. on Friday 4 April and resumes on Tuesday 22 April. If you need to find other term dates, please see our website Term Dates and Student Free Days page, under 'Our School'.
Looking forward to next term, our School Council Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 29 April. Please email our office if you'd like to attend.
Finally, we will be farewelling Jo Braden for three terms at the end of these holidays, as she takes up an Acting Principal role at Bayswater Primary School until the end of the year. Congratulations and best wishes for this exciting step Jo.
As this is our final Term 1 LPS eNews, have a safe, enjoyable break everyone!
Kim

In Science, we have been busy learning about weather and the seasons. We have been exploring how weather affects our daily lives and the world around us.
We went outside to observe the sky, discussing the different types of clouds we could see and what they might tell us about the weather. After listening to the story Little Cloud by Eric Carle, we talked about how we can use our imagination to see different shapes in the clouds. Inspired by this, the Prep students created their own cloud crafts using cotton wool, shaping them into different forms just like in the story.
Here are some of the creative shapes we have designed!
We have also been learning about how to protect our bodies in different types of weather, such as wearing a wide-brimmed hat on a hot sunny day.
We can’t wait to continue exploring the wonders of weather together!
Peer Mediators – Year 5 Student Leadership
Year 5 students at Laburnum Primary School have the wonderful leadership opportunity to become Peer Mediators. For the remainder of the year, our Peer Mediators will be helping to resolve low-level conflicts in the playground between junior school students.
With the support of yard duty teachers, they may help with things like:
Sporting their yellow fluoro vests, they will be easily recognisable in the yard each lunch time in the junior play area. These students will be trained in using Restorative Practices in order to repair relationships and have respectful conversations focused on problem solving and learning. They will calmly listen and respect different points of view, help students to communicate their problems, and assist by understanding and managing conflicts.
Our Peer Mediators are looking forward to building a strong, safe and friendly school environment for all students at Laburnum Primary School.
We look forward to presenting badges to our 2025 Peer Mediators at this Friday’s assembly.
Here's what we have been learning:
Reading
Students tried using various strategies to understand vocabulary in the texts they read. These strategies include using context clues, synonyms and parts of words they already know.
Writing
Students explored how writers use different types of sentences to engage the reader. Students examined what makes a sentence, identifying simple sentences and fragments.
Maths
Students revised place value, working on estimating using rounding, partitioning numbers, multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and placing multidigit numbers on a number line.
Inquiry
‘Identity’ is the focus of the inquiry unit this term, and students have investigated factors that influence their identity. Students will showcase their learning in the Year 5 Inquiry Expo on Monday, 31 March 2025. They are excited and can’t wait to show you their work.
The community enjoyed strolling around, reading our writing and admiring our colourful presentations. The turnout was fantastic, with a large number of families joining us to celebrate the hard work our students put into their ‘All About Me’ presentations.
Thank you to everyone who participated and made the day such a success!
Exploring Our School Grounds
During Maths, we have been learning about estimation, rounding and measurement. To bring the lessons to life, we took our learning outdoors! Students estimated the perimeter and area of various areas within the school.
After estimating, we worked in groups to accurately measure our school grounds using trundle wheels. Some of the places we measured were the four-square court, basketball court and we even tried to work out the perimeter of the oval!
It was a fantastic hands-on experience. We enjoyed applying and connecting our learning to real-life situations.
Thank you to all the fathers/carers who joined us last Friday for our first Fathering Project event for 2025!

The Annual Mother’s Day Stall is Back!
The annual Mother’s Day stall is back this year and will run on Tuesday May 6th.
Items for sale will be on display in the school office from first week of term 2. Children can peruse and form an idea of what they might like to buy for Mum (or Aunty / Grandma).
Items will cost between $3-$7.
On the day we suggest children bring a purse or zip lock bag with their money in.

Performing Arts in Term 1
There has been much interest, involvement, participation and energy in the Performing Arts room with this terms Drama focus. Did you know that the term Drama comes from the Greek word meaning ‘action’? It is a specific mode of fiction that is represented in performance such as a play, mime or opera. We began 'Learning to Learn’ this term by developing a Performing Arts Matrix. A list of agreed statements were developed and are on display to ensure that our immersing, creating and sharing time is a positive one.
Prep
Students (some pictured at the top of this page) have been exploring various nursery rhymes for their rhythm, rhyme, character analysis and storyline. They’re learning to apply two elements of drama; Movement and Voice. These apply to how you can use your face, body and voice to play a character and show emotions. Sharing final products with each other and their classroom teacher was a highlight.
Years 1 & 2
By examining the plays 'Waiting isn’t Easy' and 'The Rainbow Fish', students are learning to apply the drama elements of character and relationship.
Character relates to who the character is and how they behave. Relationships, extend on character to include how the characters’ connections and interactions affect the dramatic action to express, for example, friendships. Students have been actively involved in bringing these plays to life and sharing them with each other.
Years 3 & 4
Students have been immersed in Indigenous dreamtime stories, Balinese shadow puppetry, African and Chinese street storytelling to identify the why, how and importance of drama in storytelling. A particular highlight was when students discussed and shared their own cultures use of storytelling. Students discovered that while each of these practices are unique, there are also many similarities such as bringing community together and the importance of passing down culture to future generations. Students then created their own very entertaining and thoughtful stories in small groups.
Years 5 & 6
Students have been examining the works of mime artists Charlie Chaplin, Marcel Marceau, The Umbilical Brothers and Rowan Atkinson to learn about the key elements of mime. An appreciation of the ways history has affected the development of mime was acknowledged as we focused on each artist. For example, Marcel Marceau was inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s work in the silent movies when developing his style and that Michael Jackson was inspired by Marceau’s walk when creating his signature moon walk. Mime elements being explored are illusion, story-telling, non-verbal communication and gesture. In groups, students are creating and applying these elements of mime.
