Bullying No Way is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across Australia this week. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to prevent bullying.
The new hero colour for the campaign is purple – symbolising peace, strength and empowerment to take a stand against bullying behaviour. You can read about our Wellbeing Team's plans for this week on the Thrive page in this eNews.
Throughout this week, our teachers are engaging students in meaningful discussions and tasks aimed at promoting empathy, understanding and respect for diversity. We encourage parents and carers to take this opportunity to have open and honest conversations with their children about the impact of bullying and what they can do if they need support.
You can visit the Bullying No Way website for tips around how to have this discussion. Please ensure you talk with your child about online behaviour in your own home, as cyber safety continues to be the biggest concern for many schools, including LPS.
Parents can access the school’s Bullying Prevention Policy to learn more about our process for preventing and responding to bullying.
If you have concerns that your child is being bullied, please contact their classroom teacher in the first instance. If you believe the behaviour constitutes a crime, or is a serious incident of cyberbullying, please refer to the Bullying No Way website for information on how to report to other authorities and access wellbeing help.
An important reminder to our community of the significant number of LPS students with anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. LPS allergens include eggs, kiwi fruit, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. cashews, pistacchios, walnuts, hazlenuts, pecans), pine nuts, coconut, dairy products, fish and shellfish, wheat and other grasses, soy, sesame, certain insect stings, pollen, animal hair and medications. It is critical that the school community understands that contact with or ingesting these allergens could be life-threatening for some of our students.
Even if your own child can eat the foods above, we try to reduce the risks to others by asking for your support in a number of ways. Shared food and food brought from home can unwittingly pose a risk. Importantly, we ask that you do not provide your child with peanut butter or Nutella sandwiches or snacks with nut products in them, as nuts are our most prevalent allergens.
Additionally, parents should not provide birthday food treats for their children to share at school. As the risk of sharing foods is too high, our teachers will not distribute these.
Our school is ‘allergy aware’ and, by reducing the risks and developing the strategies suggested by Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia, as outlined in our school Anaphylaxis Management Policy, we aim to educate all students about caring for themselves and others.

Our Capital Works project remains ahead of schedule. The roof is completed. Brickwork on the faces of the building has been rapidly progressing, and many of the windows have now been installed. This week, we had the privilege of a tour of the building to discuss some finer points of classrooms. It was stunning to see how the architects have captured the brief provided through consultation with our school community in late 2022.
In readiness for moving into these fantastic new classrooms (and the outdoor deck shown above), the school is working through a staged plan for removing existing relocatable classrooms.
Two Year 5 classes, 5W and 5P, will be relocated to Room 3 and the Lab by the end of this term. The Victorian School Building Authority will remove their existing classroom building in the October holidays.
Term 4 is the busiest term for the VSBA relocatables team. We are pleased that they can accommodate removing this building to allow our builders to fully reinstate that area.
The VSBA will also remove or demolish the senior school toilet block in October, as well as the adjacent shelter shed that currently houses the secondhand uniform shop. Thanks to those parents who are assisting with moving uniforms and Parents Group resources to their temporary new location in the canteen.
After a very long time, the Performing Arts Centre will again stand proudly looking across open space towards Blacks Walk. We have plans to freshen up the paintwork on this building, funded by donations to our tax-deductible Building Fund. Thank you to those parents who have made a donation this year, allowing us to improve our buildings beyond the Department-funded ‘essential maintenance’.
After the recent completion of the Room 4 building works, Year 2M have moved into this bright, newly painted and carpeted classroom. This allows Year 5W to move into Room 3.
All other classes can remain in their current rooms. The Year 4 relocatables will stay onsite near the oval until classes are using the new building. We’ll look forward to seeing these portable buildings go as well!
It’s certainly a domino effect as we decant various classes while trying to keep disruption to an absolute minimum. Thank you for your understanding.
Dress Up Day with this year's theme being 'Reading is Magic'. We are looking forward to seeing our LPS staff and students dress up in a variety of costumes that reflect their favourite characters and books!
the yard or arriving at 3.45pm. Please remind your child to either commence walking home at 3.30pm or have a pre-arranged meeting place to collect them.

This year the Bullying, No Way! Week of Action will be Monday 12th to Friday 16th August with a focus on the message ‘Everyone Belongs’.
We will be doing the following to take part and encourage students to stand up against bullying:
At home, please have a chat with your child about ways they help other students feel they belong in the classroom and playground.
Thank you!
For the first two weeks of Term 2, Preps completed their first ever school swimming program. Although lots of students do partake in swimming lessons outside of school, this was the first without mums and dads.
All of the Preps were so successful at being independent. They were able to look after all belongings and make sure they came back to school with everything they took with them. The teachers were so proud of how students took on this independence challenge and showed everyone that they are very capable.
All students had an amazing time learning to swim with their friends. They had fun learning to torpedo kick, use kick boards and dive for weights. They also participated in a water safety day, where they learned what to do if they got into trouble in the water. To finish this session, they got to wear old clothing over bathers into the pool. This enabled them to feel what it would be like if they fell into water with their clothing on.
What a fun way to begin the second half of the year!

Year 5 are hooked on the Olympics!
Year 5 students have incorporated their passion about the Olympics across all areas of their learning.
In Reading, the students have been learning all about symbolism. They have created Olympic mascots for the Brisbane Games in 2032. Students considered how they could symbolise the values of the Olympic Games and the city of Brisbane when creating a mascot to represent the Australian hosted event.

Mascots created by 5W students
Year 5 students have been practising asking deeper level thinking questions. In Maths, students used a questioning routine to pose questions about the Olympics to help them gather data, which they analysed using graphs they created.

Spud-tacular Showdown: The Epic Tale of the Potato Olympics!
In Year 6, our students have been immersing themselves in the excitement of the 2024 Paris Olympics through a unique mathematical lens. Last week, we proudly hosted the very first Laburnum Primary School Potato Olympics!
Our Potato Olympics kicked off with a burst of creativity as students designed their potato competitors with delightful faces and assembled teams of four. Each team then crafted a name for their potato squad and chose a country to represent. The next crucial step involved carefully estimating, accurately measuring and recording the exact height, weight, and girth (circumference) of each potato athlete on the official Olympic data sheet.

The Potato Olympics featured five official stadiums where the action unfolded. The events our potato squads competed in were:

With their competitors checked in, warmed up, and briefed on the official event rules, it was time for the 2024 Potato Olympics to commence.
As our spud athletes took on each event, we carefully recorded their diving capacity, weight lifted, duration, length, and laps completed on the Olympic scoring sheet. Our respected Olympic Officials (teachers) ensured the results were thoroughly verified before we analysed the data and created engaging graphs.

The Potato Olympics were a fantastic experience, showcasing the true Olympic spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play. We had an amazing time competing in the 2024 Potato Olympics!
Prep - Year 2:
In Term 3, the Prep - 2 students have continued to learn the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) ball bounce, skipping and the overarm throw and catch.
Each session, the students run two laps around the basketball court and complete 20 catches before we mark the roll. We explicitly teach the steps involved to perform the correct skill technique and, after the students have had time to practise the skill in a static environment, we then play a modified game to apply the skill. For example, we model how to skip forwards, the students have time to practise individually and we finish with a game like Ship, Shark, Shore, but with the students skipping. We have also introduced the big skipping rope. Students can either start in the middle of the rope and skip or enter the rope while it is spinning, skip and then exit the rope.

Years 3 - 6:
In Term 3, the Years 3 – 6 students have been learning about ‘Invasion games’ in our Game Sense unit, where we teach the skills and strategies that can be applied to sports, such as netball, basketball, AFL and soccer.
Similarly to the Prep to Year 2, our students in Year 3 – 6 start each session with running two laps around the basketball court and completing 20 overarm throw and catches in pairs. We explicitly model the strategy we are teaching, allow time to practise this in a drill situation and then see if they can use it in a modified game. Some of the strategies we focus on when the team is in an attacking mode is to spread out towards your goals and move away from the defenders. When the team is in a defence mode, we encourage students to find one player from the attacking team and try to prevent them from getting the ball. These strategies can be applied to any invasion game.

House Athletics:
Congratulations to all the students in Year 3 to 6 that competed in the House Athletics Carnival on Thursday 1 August at Tom Kelly Athletics Track. Given we had to re-schedule the event due to rain, we were certainly very lucky to have such amazing weather. A big thank you to the parent volunteers for being so flexible and being able to help out on the day. These events certainly cannot run without your support! Congratulations to our House Captains as well for their efforts in helping out with the Year 3 and 4 Carnival.
The day isn’t just about winning a ribbon for first, second and third; it is also about being part of a team and trying your best. Students are awarded points for each time they compete in an event on the day and then we add them up to see which House wins, and….the overall results were: 1st – Conder, 2nd – McCubbin, 3rd – Streeton and 4th – Roberts.
Best of luck to the students who made it through to represent our school at the District Athletics Carnival on 30 August.
Level Sport:
All students from Years Prep – 6 have been participating in their one hour of Level Sport sessions per week with the Specialist teachers this year. For our Prep – Year 4 students, the focus has been on extending what the students have already been learning in their PE lessons and building confidence in a range of skills, such as catching, throwing, skipping, teamwork and communication.
Our Year 6 students have been preparing for the upcoming Summer Sports Round Robin where they can choose to compete in volleyball/volleystars, cricket, basketball and tennis. Any parents who would be available to help out on the day of this event, please let your classroom teacher know as it would be greatly appreciated! The Year 5 students have also been learning the skills of the above sports in preparation for next year.
Joggers Club:
Congratulations to all the students that have been attending Jogger’s Club, held every Tuesday and Wednesday on the oval from 11am to 11.30am. All students who attend and complete at least one lap (run, walk or jog) receive house points. We are getting very close to handing out some participation awards for 25 attendances or more. A big thanks to the House Captains for running this program during lunch time.
