In 2026 NAPLAN, LPS is again celebrating very strong results for our Year 3 and 5, maintaining our reputation and performance. 

Each school has received NAPLAN data that indicates the percentage  of students who achieved 'Exceeding or Strong' for each NAPLAN area. At LPS, our students performed as 'Exceeding' or 'Strong' as follows:

• Year 3 Reading 86% (2025: 85%, 2024: 91% and 2023: 82%)
• Year 3 Spelling 80% (2025: 79%, 2024: 89% and 2023: 70%)
• Year 3 Numeracy 84% (2025: 81%, 2024: 84% and 2023: 85%) 
• Year 3 Writing 93% (2025: 90%, 2024: 92% and 2023: 90%) 
• Year 3 Grammar and Punctuation 87% (2025: 73%, 2024: 82% and 2023: 68%) 
  
  
• Year 5 Reading 92% (2025: 90%, 2024: 91% and 2023: 90%) 
• Year 5 Spelling 91% (2025: 78%, 2024: 88% and 2023: 85%) 
• Year 5 Numeracy 90% (2025: 93%, 2024: 89% and 2023: 91%)
• Year 5 Writing 91% (2025: 87%, 2024: 92% and 2023: 93%)
• Year 5 Grammar and Punctuation 84% (2025: 80%, 2024: 86% and 2023: 87%) 

Schools also receive information about students' Relative Growth. This indicates the percentage of students who had high or medium learning growth, when compared to students that had a similar NAPLAN score two years earlier.

Across all areas, between 82% and 92% of our Grade 5 students had high or medium growth, which is a result of the outstanding learning that has taken place since early Grade 3. We were particularly impressed by their Relative Growth in Spelling, given the focus on this area by our staff over the last two years.

NAPLAN results are a reflection of the teaching and learning that occurs at every level of the school. Congratulations to our teachers and thanks to all parents for building our students' important foundations for future learning.

This year Laburnum Primary School will be participating in the Bullying No Way: National week of action, 17 to 21 August.

Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country, providing an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to bullying prevention. It also gives us an opportunity to connect with students, staff and community to implement workable solutions to prevent bullying.

The theme for this year's campaign is Small Acts, Big Impact.

It takes a community to address bullying behaviours, within and beyond the school gate.

Students can make a big impact through small acts of kindness and support for others being bullied. Trusted adults are there to guide children and young people as they learn how small, thoughtful actions can create a positive difference and encourage reporting of bullying.

During the week, we will engage students in meaningful discussions and activities that highlight how small actions can create a big impact. We encourage families to use this time to have open and supportive conversations with their children about recognising bullying, its effects, and ways they can make a positive difference.

Grade 1 students have been enjoying swimming lessons and are learning skills to build confidence and independence in the water. Our Water Safety Day reinforced essential water safety messages. The students learnt how to recognise safe and unsafe situations around water, the importance of always swimming with an adult, and how to respond in an emergency. We are proud of the effort and resilience shown by students throughout the swimming program so far. Best of all, they are having lots of fun!

In Science students investigated the needs of living things. They explored what plants and animals need to survive, grow and stay healthy, and discussed the difference between needs and wants. Students planted broad bean seeds to study the conditions plants need to grow and observed changes over time. They also conducted an experiment with celery placed in blue-coloured water to discover how plants absorb and transport water through their stems. We can’t wait to see how big our broad bean seeds can grow!

Grade 2

Grade 2 has had a fantastic time swimming. Students have shown the school values of respect and integrity by making sure that they are following safety instructions in the pool and taking responsibility for their own learning when it comes to water safety. All three classes have had lots of fun learning new swimming strokes and techniques, while making sure they understand the importance of water safety at the same time.

There have been highlights in the classroom too. In Maths we have been looking at mass and capacity, comparing different weights, while measuring the mass of objects on scales and comparing which object has more mass than others. It has been a great start to the term and students have made sure to follow the school values when participating in all activities.

Respectful Relationships education is an important part of the Victorian Curriculum from Prep to Year 12. It helps build a school community where everyone is treated with respect, kindness and fairness.

At Laburnum Primary School, Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) is incorporated into the curriculum alongside elements of School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). Each week, students take part in a clear and structured wellbeing lesson. These lessons help build social and emotional skills step by step, in a way that supports all learners. RR&RR cover eight topics of Social and Emotional Learning.

Grade 3

Students have been busy measuring up a storm as they wrap up their exciting unit on measurement! As part of their final project, “Measurement Me,” students explored how to measure length using formal units such as millimetres and centimetres. Armed with rulers and measuring tapes, they carefully measured different parts of their bodies, including their arms, hands, legs and feet. There was plenty of excitement as students compared their results and discovered just how unique everyone’s measurements are! Be sure to take a look at our fantastic “Measurement Me” displays, proudly showcased in the corridor outside the Grade 3 classrooms.

In Inquiry, students are diving into the fascinating world of Earth’s natural resources and learning why it’s so important to use these resources. sustainably. So far, they have explored the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy and worked together to develop thoughtful class definitions of sustainability. Students have also been investigating how water is used in everyday places like the kitchen, bathroom, garden and school, recording usage in red and brainstorming clever water-saving ideas in blue.

As the term continues, students will take part in hands-on experiments exploring the water cycle, desalination and filtration. They are already building a strong understanding of why water is such a precious resource and how we can all play a part in protecting it!

In Reading, students have explored how authors make their writing more engaging by using different types of sentences. They learnt to identify main and subordinate clauses, as well as simple, compound and complex sentences, while reading an information text about the water cycle. Students then applied this knowledge by finding interesting sentences in their Just Right Books and discussing how varying sentence structures can improve the flow and impact of writing.

In Writing, students continued their poetry unit by experimenting with both rhyming and free verse poems. They focused on using descriptive language to create vivid images for their readers before revising and editing their work to make it even stronger. It has been wonderful to see students thoughtfully improving their poems by adding detail, choosing more precise vocabulary and checking their spelling to create polished final pieces.

As part of our Bullying Prevention approach at Laburnum, we are focussing on the behaviour of standing up for yourself and others. One way we are doing this is through the Grade 5 Stand Up Project. At the beginning of Term 2, Grade 5 students participated in a workshop where they learnt the importance of speaking up for each other and strategies they can use to do this, such as the ‘Stop, Walk, Talk’ prompt. 

After this workshop, several Grade 5 students volunteered to be 'Stand Up' (SUP) Leaders, to spread the message about being assertive and looking out for each other across the school.

In Term 2, our SUP Leaders helped facilitate a parent information session, where they demonstrated leadership and public speaking skills as they taught parents about this initiative. They also attended a staff meeting last week, where they encouraged staff to educate their classes about this important topic. 

Going forward, our SUP Leaders will be delivering lessons to our Grade 4 students. Across two sessions, they will share an important anti-bullying message and teach the strategies they have learned for standing up for one another, fostering a culture of kindness, respect, and inclusion throughout our school.

This has been a great opportunity for all Grade 5 students to demonstrate the school values of Respect and Integrity by encouraging everyone across the school to look out for each other.

Welcome to Term 3 in the Art Room with Grades 4, 5 and 6!

Grade 6 students have already started discussions around their graduation gift to the school this year. They looked at photos of what past Grade 6 cohorts have contributed, understanding the legacy and continued recognition that Art works can bring to communities.

Individual classes will be working on collaborative paintings and brushing up on their colour mixing, printing skills and composition ideas. Students are being introduced to how Elements of Design such as colour themes, pattern and shape, can enhance their contributions and bring class works together.

Grade 5 students have begun their clay sculptures. They trimmed and rolled an even slab of clay and joined the edges to form a standing cylindrical shape, as the base or body of their work. Next week they will be joining a top shape to the work using pinch pot method and “slip and score” technique. Then their work comes to life with additional features and decoration, building on “relief” shapes, scratching in and stamping. Student’s individual plans and drawings will support them to make their sculpture, according to what the shape suggests for each of them.

Grade 4 students are creating dioramas that correlate with their learning inquiry this term. They are visualising small worlds that show us the process of precipitation and water cycles in nature. Some students are still needing shoe boxes to begin their work. We would be grateful for any extra donations.

Students are exploring how card and paper can be folded, cut, sculpted and layered to depict three-dimensional space. They are also experimenting with simple paper mechanics for moving parts in these worlds.

Our Art Captains will be promoting a school Art Exhibition of works from home this term. A theme will be announced at assembly. As always, they will be keeping the Art Notice Board updated with awarded works, current exhibitions and community art competitions and classes. Please remember to check the Notice Board regularly.
