Principal's Message

This eNews features some photos from the recent Grade 6 camp. I had the priviledge of attending this camp and was impressed with the resilience of all the students. The Grade 6 students thrived when faced with varying degrees of indiviual challenge and they participated enthusiastically in all of the activities.

Learning Expos have been once again well attended by LPS families. Our students shine when given the opportunity to showcase and share their learning. Thank you for supporting our students.

Please note that the Webex meeting link for each teacher can be found in your meeting confirmation.

The World Cup is in full swing, and LPS has been celebrating with some soccer themed lunchtime activities run by our House Captains and coordinated by Mr Bowman. The penalty shootout was a real highlight of the week!

Junior School - Grades 1 & 2

Grade 1

Grade 1 students recently went to Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead to learn about what family and school life was like in the past. Students were fascinated as they watched a skilled woodturner transform a piece of wood into a spinning top. It was exciting to see traditional craftsmanship in action and learn about the tools and techniques used long ago.

Students enjoyed participating in old-fashioned past times such as making dolls from wooden pegs, walking on stilts and riding in billycarts. Tug-o-war was made even more fun sliding in the mud!

The visit to the historic schoolhouse gave students a glimpse into what school life was like many years ago. Sitting at wooden desks arranged in rows, writing on chalkboards and learning about the strict rules of the past helped students appreciate how different classrooms are today.

By the end of our visit, many of us were ready for a nap! We were incredibly proud of the way our Grade 1 students embraced every activity with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Grade 2

Grade 2 students also visited Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead to explore what family and school life was like in the past. There was lots of anticipation about what to expect and what similarities and differences we might observe.
Students were captivated as they watched a talented woodturner transform a block of wood into a spinning top, which we were able to keep and have a try of back at school. It was fascinating to see traditional craftsmanship in action and learn about the tools and techniques used by people long ago and discuss how things have changed.

The students also enjoyed taking part in many old-fashioned activities including walking on stilts, making dolls from wooden pegs and the most exciting of all, riding and pushing their friends in billy carts! They even had the opportunity to make rope  by spinning, twining and pulling the fiber in a traditional way.
It was a great day for all of Grade 2 and their teachers!

Middle School - Grades 3 & 4

Grade 3

Grade 3 students have been actively engaged in Mathematics, consolidating their addition strategies and exploring the concept of angles. As part of their learning, students created their own “right-angle finders.” They used these to identify right angles within the classroom, and to identify other angles which are smaller or larger than right angles. They also enjoyed investigating the angles hidden within the letters of their names using a block sans-serif font.

In Science, students have continued their investigations into living and non-living things. A highlight of the term was exploring leaf litter around the school grounds. Using magnifying glasses, students carefully examined and identified examples of living and non-living matter. This hands-on activity sparked thoughtful discussions about seasonal changes and how they may influence what we discover in our environment.

Students have also been working diligently during Writing sessions, using their scientific knowledge to create informative animal reports. Throughout the term, they have focused on developing their understanding of simple and compound sentences, with a particular emphasis on using a variety of conjunctions to connect ideas effectively. Students have successfully applied these skills in their information reports, demonstrating both their writing abilities and their understanding of scientific concepts.

They were excited to showcase their learning and share their completed reports with parents and families at our Expo. It was wonderful to celebrate their hard work and achievements together.

Grade 4

This term in Science, our Grade 4 students have been learning about food chains and how living things depend on one another for survival. The students have explored how energy moves through a food chain, beginning with producers such as plants, and continuing through consumers such as herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

Students investigated the different roles animals play within ecosystems, including scavengers and decomposers that help break down and recycle dead plants and animals.

Through hands-on activities, discussions and research tasks, students developed an understanding of how each living thing contributes to maintaining a healthy environment.

As part of their learning, students also completed a project on invasive species. They researched non-native plants and animals and examined the impacts of these species on the existing food chain.

Please note: During Book Fair week, the library will be closed before school and at lunchtime.

Volunteers Needed
If you are available to help on any of the above dates, we would greatly appreciate your support. Please see Mrs Keogh in the library to add your name to the roster.

Book Week

Just a reminder that Book Week will be celebrated next term from 24-28 August, with our Dress-Up Day on Friday 28 August.

Start thinking about which book character you would like to dress up as — perhaps one connected to the CBCA 2025 theme, “Symphony of Stories.”

Library Learning Highlights

Prep & Grade 1
Students have been exploring nursery rhymes and fairy tales. They have learnt that nursery rhymes are short, rhyming stories with repeated words and patterns. Fairy tales often begin with “Once Upon a Time,” include magical settings and characters, and usually end happily while teaching important values such as kindness, honesty, and courage.

Grade 2, 3 & 4
Students have been learning about fiction genres and how books are organised in the library. Genres explored include fantasy, mystery, adventure, and humour. They have also been learning how to choose “just right” nonfiction books and where to find them. We have discussed the difference between fiction (imaginative stories) and nonfiction (informational texts).

Grade 5 & 6
Students have been exploring senior fiction and realistic fiction genres. They have learnt that senior fiction may include more mature themes and advanced vocabulary and can be found on the blue twirls or the senior fiction stand in the library. Students have also enjoyed reading realistic fiction stories that reflect real-life experiences and challenges. Favourite series have included the “Can You See Me” books and Morris Gleitzman’s “Soon, Then, Now” series.
