Principal's Message

A huge thank you to all those families who helped their children dress up for the recent Book Week. This is a much-loved annual event, also supported by our teachers and superbly led by Wendy Keogh and our Library Captains. We appreciate everyone's enthusiasm.

There are lots of opportunities for dads to join us at school this month, as we head towards Father's Day. Our much-loved Father's Day Breakfast is on tomorrow, again organised by enthusiastic Parents Group volunteers. After the breakfast, dads are most welcome to bring their children into classrooms at 8:50am.

The following Friday, it's time for the next Fathering Project event; Games and Catch Up

It's been encouraging to see more dads joining The Fathering Project at LPS. This successful program aims to help give children the best fathers and father figures they can have, so they can thrive academically, socially, physically and emotionally. The program quotes research that shows when fathers participate in school activities, meetings and events, children enjoy school more, are less likely to have behaviour issues and are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities. Children are also more likely to engage in school and perform better academically.

In between these two father-focused events, we wish all dads a very happy Father's Day.

Coinciding with the recent Parent-Teacher Meetings, your child's teacher may have spoken with you about a new or updated Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Our teachers write ILPs for some students who require additional educational support, usually to address a particular learning area.
More about ILPs can be found in our Individual Learning Plan (ILP) Policy.

We recently also published an Individual Education Plan (IEP) Policy, which has a different format that is necessary for any students who are candidates for Disability Inclusion Funding. Inner East schools are the last area in Victoria to adopt this new funding model. Replacing the Program for Students with Disabilities from this year, our IEPs have already contributed to successful funding applications for LPS students.

An ILP or IEP is one of the ways we provide a 'safety net' for students, to catch and address any learning needs. These plans are written by class teachers and, at LPS, overseen by Mrs Glenda Kelly and Mrs Sarah Bignell.

As you can see in our cover photo, the new Blacks Walk gate is open. For families living north or west of the school, or if your child rides to school, this gate offers easy before and after school access to the grounds and bike shed.

The safety tape seen in the picture is offering some temporary protection for the recently-planted native plants. Please stay on the new path so these plants become established.

We're very grateful to Whitehorse Council and the Blackburn Creeklands Advisory Committee for all their work to beautify the area outside our new gate. It's been well worth the efforts of council and volunteers to provide such a lovely connection between the school and this priceless reserve.

Finally, our thanks and warmest wishes go with Miss Allison Ryan, who starts her maternity leave after tomorrow. We will welcome Miss Kimberley McClounan tomorrow to teach Prep R. After starting her career in Melbourne, Kim has recently returned after many years teaching in London.

What's Happening?

From the Assistant Principals, Kathy and Niyati

Departure from School

A reminder that the 3.30pm bell signals the end of each school day (not 3.45pm). We have teachers on Gate Duty to cover any unavoidable  times when parents may be late at pick up. As there is no 'break time' at 3:30pm because school is finished for the day, there are no teachers on yard duty to supervise the rest of the playground. At 3.30pm, students should be heading home or to TeamKids.

It is lovely to see the many parents who take the opportunity to meet with each other after school, particularly at the Junior School playground. We thank those parents who supervise their children while doing so, and appreciate their promptness in leaving by the 3.45pm bell. As TeamKids holds a School Council License that includes use of the playground from 3.45pm, that bell signals the time for their access to begin.

We are concerned about an increase in the number of students who are staying on and playing in the yard without being actively supervised by their parent/carer. Although we have designated playgrounds, i.e. Junior School, Years 3/4 and Years 5/6 for obvious safety reasons, we are seeing some children playing after school unsupervised from 3.30pm and on equipment that is not suitable for their year level.

Please remind your children if they are walking or riding home that they need to leave at the 3.30pm bell.

And finally, if you are unable to to collect your child on any day before 3.45pm we ask that you make arrangements for them to attend the daily TeamKids after school program here.

We thank you for your support to help keep LPS children safe.

Sunsmart: A reminder to please wear a Sunsmart hat when you are outside.

LPS Snack Club continues to be a fantastic way to promote healthy eating at Laburnum Primary School. Thank you to everyone who passes by with a 'good morning' and 'thank you' for our amazing Year 4 leaders.

Thrive: The Stand-Up Project (SUP)

SUP Leaders Share Important Lessons with our Year 3/4 Students.

Recently, our amazing SUP Leaders visited the Year 3 and 4 classrooms to deliver some thoughtful and engaging lessons. These sessions included interactive online quizzes, fun movement breaks and creative poster-making tasks.

The students explored important topics such as:

  • The difference between friendship firemean on purpose, and bullying
  • How to be an upstander rather than a bystander
  • The 4Ds approach: DirectDistractDelay, and Delegate

‘Bullying is different from a friendship fire because bullying is targeted’. -  Ruby

‘I learnt about types of bullying. There is physical bullying and verbal bullying. Physical is like punching and verbal is using words.’ - Aria

‘I learnt more about friendship fire. It is about when friends have fights or arguments. We can stop it by not fighting and solving it’. - Raff

In this edition of eNews, we’re focusing on the three types of unkind behaviour covered in the lessons: friendship firemean on purpose, and bullying.

You'll find more information below to help us understand what each one means and how we can best support students in responding to them in positive ways.

Prep

On the 4th of August, our Preps celebrated 100 days of school. They paraded their amazing costumes in front of our families, buddies, Assistant Principals and Dr Dray. They were all impressed that we could count to 100!

During the day, all our learning was themed around the number 100. We made a tie that had 100 spots, played ‘Race to 100’ and made connections to the book Fancy Nancy – The 100th Day of School.

Thanks to all the parents who helped us create incredible 100-day costumes. We had so much fun!

Learn: Science Week Incursion

As part of our Science Week celebration we had the Super Science Circus Show come to visit. Students from across the school thoroughly enjoyed learning about the science behind different circus tricks.

Heidi Hoops taught students about the impact of gravity and forces through hula hoops and balancing.  Students also learnt about the importance of water and what speed is required to crack a WHIP and break the sound barrier. The show finished with a ball levitating in the air, no strings attached!

Senior School - Years 5 & 6

Year 5
As part of our inquiry unit, Year 5 students have been working hard to create a ‘Shark Tank’ pitch for a product or service they designed after completing market research. They surveyed their target audience (the Year 4s) to find out about their interests and likes before deciding on their product or service.

As part of their pitch students have had to investigate their competitors, consider the resources they would need and create an advertisement. They have enjoyed the opportunity to work with students from other Year 5 classes and loved sharing their work with the school community!

Students have also begun their learning about animal adaptations in Science.  They have learnt about how fossils are formed, the different categories of adaptations (structural and behavioural), and researched the adaptations of different animals.  Over the next couple of weeks we will be combining Science with Writing, creating an animal with adaptations and learning strategies to help us write vivid descriptions.

Our students are, of course, excited about camp. We are having discussions about what to bring, what to do on the morning of camp and what to expect on camp so that children feel prepared and ready for their adventure!

Year 6
Thinking on Our Feet:
Another Way to Learn Maths
We have been approaching Mathematics in a way that has helped us think more deeply and work together. Rather than sitting at our desks and completing problems on our own, we have been grouped into small teams and encouraged to stand at the vertical whiteboards around the room. This allows us to share our thinking, see how others approach problems and build on each other’s ideas.

We have discovered that there is often more than one way to solve a problem and explaining our reasoning to others helps us to understand it better ourselves. The classroom feels alive with discussion and energy, and we are much more willing to take risks, try out new strategies and persist with challenges because we know we have the support of our group.

Big Ideas, Young Minds: Our Business Challenge
In our inquiry unit, Data and Decisions, we have been developing important skills in collecting, analysing, and using data to make informed choices. We designed our own surveys for Year 3 students, carefully considering the kinds of questions that would give us useful information.

Once we gathered the results, we worked in teams to analyse the data and use it as the foundation for creating a business plan. This required us to think critically about what would appeal to our “target market,” how we could manage costs and what would make our idea stand out.

The most exciting part of the project was pitching our business plans. First, we presented our ideas back to the Year 3 students, who acted as “investors” and chose the businesses they would like to support. This gave us a real sense of purpose and audience for our work, and it was rewarding to see the Year 3 students so engaged in our presentations.

We also had the chance to present our pitches again, this time to our Year 6 peers and parents. Standing in front of an older audience challenged us to speak with confidence, explain our reasoning clearly and justify our business decisions. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase all the skills we had developed - from teamwork and creativity to data analysis and public speaking.

We are proud of what we have achieved over these past few weeks. Both in Mathematics and in our inquiry learning, we have shown that when we work together, share ideas and challenge ourselves, we can achieve amazing results.

We are excited to continue building on these skills in the term ahead.
