Welcome To Our Upper School
In 2008 our Upper School consists of 3 grade five and 3 grade six
classes.
Across the year the students in the Upper School investigate several Topics of Study. As well as the rich experiences provided in the classrooms the program includes exciting incursions, excursions and two fabulous camps to support the children's learning.
Topics of Investigation for 2008 include:
Natural Phenomena
During this unit the children research extreme weather and the conditions that lead to this weather. They look at how meteorologists forcast the weather and how extreme weather affects people and the land. The students conduct experiments to gain a better understanding of the how natural forces affect our world.
The Power of the Mind and the Body
" The Power of the Mind and the Body" unit encourages students to use research, guided reading materials and the media to make informed decisions about lifestyle choices such as exercise, diet and decision making skills. It investigates the causes of stress, frustration, anger peer pressure etc and how we can empower students to make the right decisions when confronted with situations like these that are new to them.
Gold
The unit includes areas of the curriculum such as Science, Maths, English, Health and Physical Education, The Arts and Civics and Citizenship.
The "Gold" unit concentrates of the era in Australia's history where gold is discovered. We investigate the effects of these discoveries and how they have impacted on our lives today. Students will investigate immigration and multi-culturalism, transport, education, business, trades etc. during this time and relate these findings to our life now. The unit includes areas of the curriculum such as English maths, Science, Civic and Citizenship and Humanities. As an integral part of unit we will be visiting Sovereign Hill for a day and night.
Civics and Citzenship
This unit includes examining our parliamentary system and how it has evolved to what it is today. We look at the three levels of government and the role that each has in our lives.
