Italian
Students at Laburnum experience one session of Italian per week with Signor. The
students are engaged in activities that compromise songs, books, letter writing,
games and stories using original and written vocabulary, as well as a variety of
incursions. These activities aim to develop an awareness of the Italian language
and culture.
The program is delivered in a bright and stimulating room and as with all our specialist areas there is a strong emphasis to integrate Italian with the chosen classroom topics. Activities are carefully planned and written in order to give many opportunities to make links with other key learning areas such as English and Mathematics, in a meaningful way.
The "communicative" approach to learning Italian has been strongly emphasised to promote the communication skills required in real life situations. With this approach students experience a range of activities relating to oral interaction, reading, responding and writing.
Students are encouraged to use the Italian language with the other teachers, as well as their family and friends in the community. Signs have been printed in Italian and placed around the school to support and aid students with their learning of Italian. Students are encouraged to interact in social exchanges using greetings and everyday expressions.
A feature of the program is our biennial Italian Festa. While children enjoy the incursions that offer children an opportunity to experience Italian performances of familiar stories, there is no doubt that the pizza and gelato are a highlight!
ITALIAN FESTA 2008
What a great celebration of our Italian program. The children enjoyed eating pizza and gelati as well as seeing Italian productions.

The highlight was the grand parade in the hall with Signor's father entertaining
us. Can you see Signor on the drums?
