Our School - School Overview

Set in a picturesque landscape, 18km east of Melbourne, our leafy environment provides our students with the opportunity to run and play in both natural and developed play spaces. As well as striving for academic excellence, we also provide a myriad of learning opportunities developing creativity, curiosity and collaboration through our specialist teaching programs and extracurricular activities. Wellbeing programs are based on the Positive Education approach, developing our students’ personal and interpersonal skills from Prep to Year 6.

Whilst we are very proud of our reputation for high academic achievement, our programs are designed to cater for the individual needs of all students. Strong emphasis is placed on the traditional learning areas of Mathematics and English. We believe that students learn best in a supportive learning environment that caters for all students' needs by building on their knowledge and skills. Teachers facilitate each child's learning by providing a challenging curriculum, personalised to the needs of each child. Supporting our strong foundation of Mathematics and English, we follow an inquiry learning approach with a focus on questioning, thinking and research skills designed to support students in taking more responsibility for their learning, reflection and goal setting.

An emphasis is also placed on developing the whole child and many opportunities are available for all our students to shine in a range of areas including the performing and visual arts, sport, language and leadership. Our school currently has 760 students, supported by 3 Principal class, 2 Leading Teachers, 31 class teachers, 8 specialist teachers and 5 education support staff. Excellent programs follow the Victorian Curriculum with specialist programs in Visual Arts, Library, Music, Physical Education and Languages (Spanish).

Ongoing school investment in Technologies has resulted in a valued reputation for offering stimulating and challenging teaching and learning programs. Our students also enjoy outstanding facilities; all air-conditioned classrooms with wireless technology, a stadium sized hall, a modern community centre, a contemporary resource centre, a heritage listed performing arts centre and extensive play areas, sited next to Blacks Walk in Blackburn.

Laburnum Primary School encourages and appreciates a high level of community satisfaction and parental involvement and support. We encourage and enjoy family participation to develop partnerships in learning and value communication between parents and teaching staff.
